Fix: 43029 atikmdag.sys Blue Screen BSOD in Windows 7/8/8.1

Solution for ATI display driver atikmdag.sys issue
GPU: ATI Graphic Cards
OS: Windows 8/7/8.1/Vista
Symptoms: Bluescreen or Stop Error 0x0000001E caused by atikmdag.sys, or often get a message: “display driver atikmdag.sys stopped responding and has successfully recovered“.
Solution: Replace the atikmdag.sys file with a newer version

This is a well-known fix for the issue if you have an ATI graphic card. During the installation of most graphic drivers in Windows Vista, an old version of atikmdag.sys is copied into C:\Windows\System32\Drivers and not the current one in the install. As a result the new drivers are attempting to access the file dated 2006 instead of 2010. Although we can’t be sure that this solution will work for you, many users have reported that the fix actually works for them and ours.

43029 Atikmdag.sys Blue Screen BSOD Stopped Responding Fix 1

Step 1: Download and install the latest ati graphic driver.

Step 2: Then go to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers and rename atikmdag.sys to atikmdag.sys.old.

Step 3: Go to ati directory (usually in C:\ATI) and find the file atikmdag.sy_.

Step 4: Copy the file to your Desktop directory.

Step 5: Open cmd.exe by going to Start -> type cmd in the search box and hit enter.

Step 6: Change the directory to Desktop by typing chdir Desktop.

Step 7: Then, type EXPAND.EXE atikmdag.sy_ atikmdag.sys. Or,
expand -r atikmdag.sy_ atikmdag.sys

Step 8: When the expansion is complete, copy the new atikmdag.sys from your Desktop to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers

Step 9: Restart your computer and the problem should be resolved.

You will probably realise that any uninstallation and reinstallation of ati drivers will not remove the old atikmdag.sys file and will not overwrite it with the latest version. You have to do it manually. Nobody knows why but who cares as long as it’s fixed.

Solution 2: Fix corrupted registry

registry-easy-boxThe registry is the lifeblood of your system. It is a single place for keeping such information as what hardware is attached, what system options have been selected, how computer memory is set up, and what application programs are to be present when the operating system is started. So obviously when something goes wrong with the registry, it can cause major problems including the atikmdag.sys BSOD problem. Unfortunately, Windows 7 doesn’t have any built-in mechanism to fix corrupted registry errors. You’ll need to clean up your registry problems with a Registry Cleaner.

This is an amazing fix. I’ve dealt with Windows-only drivers for months now, and this worked like a champ!

  • It’s great to hear that, thank you for the comment!

  • Marty

Excellent explanation of the solution to the problem, best I’ve found on any web site. My only problem is, I can’t extract the .sy_ file. Tried with the command line “Windows cannot open the file” and WinRAR but nothing works.

  • Bojan

Why you want to extract that file? Go to C:ATISupport9-8_legacy_vista32-64_dd_cccPackagesDriversDisplayLH_INFB_85563 and in that folder you have atikmdag.sy_ file. After that go to Step 4.

  • Quinnlan Boser

Can anyone play games with this awesome fix? I can’t start anything except networking programs (AIM, MSN, IE9, etc).

  • Coocoo

I’ve got a atikmpag.sys error when playing some games (Fable the lost chapters, civilization 4, dragon age 2) Does someone know a fix for this? I’ve browsed a lot but found nothing.

  • Coocoo

I mean getting bsods with an atikmpag.sys error.

  • Ruediger Wentzell

In my system, the atikmdag.sys was really the old version, unfortunately exchanging it to the new version did not solve the problem which is still on booting windows 7 the system crashes with the atikmdag.sys error.
Any ideas what could be the reason or what I might try to solve the problem?

  • Robin

Sorry for the late reaction, but my solution was to uninstall Catalyst Control Center and the drivers by using the ATI Install Manager and afterwards manually installing the drivers without Catalyst Control Center through Device Management. Normally there should be a folder like C:ATISupport where you can find the extracted drivers from previously installed Catalyst drivers.

It’s not really the best solution but from what I’ve heard there could be some problems with the Catalyst Control Center and MS Frameworks 3.5 which could cause the problem.

Hopefully this works out for some of you.

I have problem with blue screen and atikmpag.sys. I’ve installed latest CCC with drivers, old from CD also but I didn’t start windows without blue screen (blue screen always after windows welcome screen).
Everything started after installing visual studio 2008 (perhaps with ms framework 3.5, not sure), I can start windows only in safe mode or without display drivers.

Your idea unfortunately didn’t solve my problem :(
    Still have blue screens.

    Windows 7 64bit
    ATI Radeon HD 6850

Have you found solution? i have same the Radeon.

  • Arthur

the same problem after this steps.
I have installed amd ccc 12.1.

  • Valdos

I don’t have BSOD since 2 days. The only way to achieve that was by installing Microsoft Framework 4.0.
OS Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit, ATI Radeon X1550 (RV516).

  • Martin Prymus

    Thank you!

  • Amine Krayem

Hi! I have the same problem but the error code is 0x0000007E. Can you help me please? Thanks.

  • Kushi Marcus

    Thank you so much!

  • Paulo Salvado

In my case the file have the extension .mui. Can I do it or is there another way?

  • xgamerebelx

Hi I’m trying to do this with windows 8. (out of the many atikmdag.sy_ in the c:AMD file [if you could tell me which one would be best that would be amazing]). When I do switch it out for a different file it says the device is not working because Windows cannot load the drivers required for the device (code 31). What can I do to resolve this (as it puts me in 1280 x 700 resolution).

  • Thegreatpeef

Great fix thanks for the help!

  • Tea Party fools

This fix works but leaves you with messed up graphics (Can’t set to recommended settings)
i found a quick and easy approach to fix this problem.
    1. In windows vista, 7 and windows 8 open the control panel, open performance information and tools In the left hand column choose “adjust visual effects” then choose Adjust for best performance. Viola, not more error messages or BSOD’s.
There is one drawback to this method is the fact it takes you back to a classic view of your windows system. But I figure people would rather give up some aesthetics for not having to play around with error messages.

I can’t even find that atikmdag.sy_ file you’re talking about.

  • Harshal Kharat

When it stops working does it give a green coloured patch?

  • itay

Hi, I can’t find the file atikmdag.sy_. in the ATI folder. Could it be at a different location?

  • Deniz Evrim Yüksel

I did it following the steps in exact place, restarted my PC and now the highest res I get is 1024×768 + it says I should download the latest ATI Driver. Is this how it is supposed to be?

  • djonodjono

Thanks a lot brother, works great for me. Very helpful tips. Hope you always keep posting to help people again, thank you.

  • TheTopMostDog

The article is out of date; the new location of ATI Drivers is C:AMD then use the search feature for the file.

I have been having this issue with my 7970/r9-280x crossfire setup and this solution did not work.

  • Helpy McHelperton

Nowadays, the folder may be called AMD instead of ATI.

  • aynon

Just to clear one thing up for everyone. Step 3 the file atikmdag.sy_ is no longer under C:ATI it is in C:AMDSupport14-4-win7-win8-win8.1-64-dd-ccc-whqlPackagesDriversDisplayWB6A_INFB171094 in Windows 7

  • I had this problem for about 1 year with my ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 on Dell n5010 Laptop.

    The solution:
    1. First install the latest version of Microsoft .NET Framework
    2. Install the latest drivers (/ from AMD.

Laptop is working like charm for more than 1 month without any problem.

    Hope it helps

  • ravon30

How long did it take to expand the file as mine is stuck on 73% increase. thanks
